Google’s Latitude is GPS software that lets you virtually turn your phone into a tracking device. This extraordinary software uses Google Maps to display locations of friends, wherever they may be. Latitude can be installed on any Blackberry phones, phones running Windows Mobile and also on models with Google’s Android.
The software is free of cost and can be downloaded from www.google.com/latitude.
The application is simple to install and is available as an add-on to Google Maps. Once you have installed it you will be requested to join Latitude using your Google account. For you to be able to track your friends you should first add them to your list. There are two options for doing this. Add friends manually and or add them through the Google Address Book. Either way there is no way of seeing where your friends are if they do not accept the request sent by you.
Once you are online with your friends you can see exactly where they are on your Google Maps software. Your friends on the other hand can also track your whereabouts.
Since such an application can also be misused, Google offers three types of privacy settings:
In addition there are other options for hiding your location such as:
The interface also lets you choose locations to meet up by pointing out nearest restaurants and other businesses near you or your friends. Also available is the facility to get directions towards wherever your friends are. The software also lets you toggle between satellite mode and map mode, zoom in and zoom out and best of all it also displays up to day traffic conditions.
The software is really fun if you have many friends who have mutually agreed to be in touch and can be very useful if you want to know where your friends are at the moment.
